So why cabbage and how does cabbage help weight loss and your health in general?

Well cabbage is a very low calorie vegetable which is why it is very effective. Cabbage is full of fiber, making you feel full on this diet. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), raw cabbage contains only 20 calories per 31/2 ounces. This 20 calories will not even count as you will practically burn that off just from chewing the cabbage.

In terms of health benefits, cabbage is also a cruciferous vegetable, so it reduces inflammation, balances blood sugar, stimulates immunity, shrinks tumors and destroys cancer.

A 2014 study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention suggests that cabbage is a source of important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are related to the prevention of chronic diseases associated to oxidative stress, such as in cancer and coronary artery disease.

  1. Danger of weight gain: Critics believe that you are in fact losing water, rather than fat, on the plan which can result in you gaining weight again very quickly once you go back to a normal diet.
  2. Limitations: Your menu options are severely limited on this diet. It gets very boring, very quickly. If you want to try it again, it's recommended that you wait 2 weeks first.
  3. Preparation: If you’re planning to try it, you’ll need to make some large batches of cabbage soup as preparation so you’ll have plenty to eat throughout the week. You don’t want to be hungry and weak while trying to cook another batch of cabbage soup. Also note, cabbage is not the only thing you will eat as you are allowed a few other foods.

You should try to stick with fruits with lower sugar content like apples, blueberries, etc.  I enjoy eating baked cinnamon apples (using gala or Honeycrisp apples) in the morning, a large fruit salad and cabbage soup for lunch, and cabbage soup and a melon salad for dinner. Get your crunchy fix with dried fruits.  Snack on fruit throughout the day. Frozen pineapples and frozen grapes make delicious treats. Also, frozen watermelon blended makes a refreshing, natural slushy.

Day 2- Eat nothing but vegetables (except corn or other starchy veggies). However, you do get to start the day with a baked potato (russet or sweet).

Day 3-  Today you eat fruits AND veggies (except bananas, corn, and other starchy vegetables)

Day 4- Today you eat only bananas and milk/yogurt in addition to your cabbage soup. Try making it into a smoothie.

Day 5-  Today eat only tomatoes (6-8) and protein like fish, turkey, and chicken.

Day 6-  Today its protein and veggies- Unlike yesterday you can have other vegetables besides tomatoes.

Day 7-  Today it’s just fruits, vegetables, and juices.

Day 8- Celebrate the work you have put in and see the results in the mirror.
